Mescal has become an Irish-born actor. He gained recognition for his leading role in the miniseries *Normal People*, in which he received a nomination at the Primetime Emmys.
Before starting acting, he was a Gaelic football player at the under-21 level for County Kildare and a member of Maynooth Football Club, playing as a defender. His former coach Cian O'Neill said of Paul Mescal as "very mature for his age. Physically, he was very strong. He was an excellent scorer." After sustaining a jaw injury, Paul ended up giving up Gaelic football.
That year, in 2017, he earned his degree with a BA in Arts from Trinity College University in Dublin.
In 2019, he started acting with an appearance on a pilot episode of the television series *Bump*.
Later in 2020, Paul Mescal got his initial lead roles. He portrays Connell Waldron in the series *Normal People* opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones and stars as Sean McKeogh in the series *The Deceived*.
By 2021, Paul Mescal acts in his first major film, *The Lost Daughter* by Maggie Gyllenhaal, in the role of an Irish beach attendant working in Greece.
By 2023, he received a nomination in the Leading Actor category at the Oscars for his leading role in the feature film *Aftersun* by Charlotte Wells. Additionally, he got the principal role in *Gladiator 2* by Ridley Scott, with filming set to begin in June of 2023.
